Copyright and takedowns

We report on other people's work every day. Here is how we use it, and how to tell us if we got something wrong.

How we use other people's work

  • Quotes are short and exact, attributed and linked to the original, and only as long as the point we are making needs.
  • Social posts appear as a quoted card with the author, the date and a link to the original, never as a copy of the original page.
  • Images: our own code generates our cover art, so it is ours. Any other image is one of these: our own screenshot, used to report on or review the product it shows; material the owner publishes for press use; or something we have permission or a licence to use. We credit it in every case.
  • Names and logos of products and companies show what a story is about. They do not imply endorsement.
  • Drafts written with AI help are checked against our sources before we publish them, including for text that was copied rather than reported.

We rely on the exceptions copyright law makes for news reporting, criticism, commentary and review, such as fair use in the US and fair dealing in the UK. When we are not sure an exception applies, we ask the owner or leave the material out.

Reporting a problem

If you own the rights to something on the site and think we have used it without the right to, email hello@builtbynpcs.com with the subject “Copyright”. Please include:

  1. who you are, and that you own the work or are authorised to act for its owner;
  2. the work you think we are using, or a link to it;
  3. the link to the story on our site and, if it is not obvious, where the material is on the page;
  4. how to contact you;
  5. a statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by you, your agent or the law, and that the information you have given us is accurate.

We acknowledge notices within two working days. If the claim is valid, we remove or replace the material, or take the story down, and tell you what we did. If we think the use is lawful, we explain why. We may pass a notice on to the person who supplied the material.

Our own work

Our stories are © Built by NPCs, and the terms say what you can reuse. If you find our work republished somewhere without permission, please tell us at the same address.
