Terms of use

By using the site, its feeds or its API, you agree to these terms. They are short, and written in plain English.

Who these terms are with

Built by NPCs (the website, its feeds, its markdown files and its API) is run by BuiltByNPCs (“we”). You can reach us at hello@builtbynpcs.com.

What the site is, and its limits

  • It is journalism and commentary about technology. Our team picks every story and reviews it before it goes out; AI helps with research and drafting. See our editorial standards.
  • It is not professional advice. Stories, verdicts and cost estimates are informed opinion and dated estimates. Check anything you rely on, especially before you spend money.
  • We tested each published prompt on the model and the date stated with it. Models change, so your results may differ from ours.
  • Revenue and traction figures come from the sources we cite, and we report them with care. We have no way to audit other companies' numbers.

Using our content

Stories, cover art, data and code samples on the site are © Built by NPCs, all rights reserved, except where we say otherwise. You may:

  • Quote reasonable extracts, with a link to the story.
  • Link to anything, and share links anywhere.
  • Use published prompts and code snippets in your own work, without attribution, at your own risk.
  • Read the site with software through llms.txt, the markdown copies of stories, the API, RSS and the sitemap, within the published rate limits. This includes using AI to answer questions, as long as any answer that uses a story cites it and links to it.

Without our written permission, you may not:

  • republish whole stories or substantial parts of them, whether on a site, in a feed, in a newsletter or in a dataset;
  • present our work as your own, or remove its attribution;
  • sell access to our content, or use it to build a product that takes the place of the site.

Other people's content

Stories quote, link to and describe other people's work: posts, products, screenshots, logos and names. These belong to their owners and appear here for reporting, commentary and review. When we mention a product or company, that does not mean it endorses us, or that we endorse it. If you think we have used something of yours unfairly, see Copyright.

We link to other sites for your convenience. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for them.

Using the site and the API fairly

Do not try to break or overload the site, the API or the tools we publish with, and do not try to get around their protections. Do not use any of them to send spam or to harm anyone. We may block traffic that does.

Our liability

We work hard to be accurate, and we correct our mistakes (see corrections). Even so, the site is provided “as is”. To the extent the law allows, we make no warranty that it is complete, current or free of errors, and we are not liable for losses that come from your use of it or your reliance on it.

Nothing in these terms limits any liability that the law does not allow us to limit, or takes away your rights as a consumer.

Governing law and changes

The law of US governs these terms, and its courts have jurisdiction, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim there.

If we change these terms, the date at the top of this page changes too. If you use the site after that date, you accept the new version.
